Parking - Barking Town Centre

30/04/2004 - Barking Town Centre Parking Assessment

Received a report considering the impact of future development on existing public car parking provision in Barking Town Centre and a car parking assessment that looks at parking provision during future development, future parking demand, car park management and on-street parking.

Agreed, in order to enable the Council to consider its options in achieving its Community Priority of “Regenerating the Local Economy”, to:

  1. A new policy requiring developers to provide a contribution towards providing a multi-storey car park elsewhere in Barking Town Centre;

  1. Note the potential requirement for capital funding which would need to be considered in the context of the Council’s overall Capital Programme;

  1. Re-examine the current development programme with a view to ensuring there is sufficient car parking space available within the Town Centre and where this cannot be accommodated off-street, to introduce on-street pay and display as a temporary measure;

  1. Consultation to be undertaken with the Barking Town Centre Statutory Agencies Partnership;

  1. A further report to be submitted to the Executive following the results of the above consultation, including a comprehensive Car Parking Strategy for Barking Town Centre; and

  1. Any potential loss of income during the development phases be considered as an unavoidable item to fund within the Medium Term Financial Strategy.
